Abstract

Leadership and management are two concepts that are always fascinating to study, as they play a vital role in determining the success of an organisation. Discussions on leadership are invariably linked to efforts to understand the character, attitudes, abilities and behaviour that a leader must possess. A wide range of literature on leadership explains how a person can become a good leader, capable of setting an example, making sound decisions, and adapting their leadership style to the circumstances and needs of the organisation. This paper aims to provide an overview of the nature of leadership and management, particularly in relation to a person’s ability to direct, manage, and influence others to achieve common goals. The terms ‘leader’ and ‘manager’ are often used in different contexts, although the two are closely interrelated in the process of organisational management. A leader places greater emphasis on the ability to influence, inspire and provide direction, whilst a manager focuses on planning, organising, executing and supervising resources. Consequently, understanding the differences and relationship between leadership and management is essential so that both can be applied in a balanced manner to achieve organisational objectives effectively and sustainably.
